When a loved one hates

When a loved one hates

Living in an immigrant society, I wonder if the emotions that run through the bottom of our hearts are
hate as well as loneliness and nostalgia. After all I’ve done for you, how can you do this to me? How can you
do this to me even after I have forced my pride down for you in the toughest situations? The Lord knows that
it is this hate that causes us to take away our happiness, to plant a heart of ingratitude instead of gratitude,
to fail to look forward to a bright future, and to constantly look back at the past. So the Lord asks,
"Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." “If you greet only your brothers, what are you
doing more than others?” (Matthew 5:44-47)

Cain once ran around the Mountain together with his only brother, catching insects and playing in the water,
living happily alongside his brother Abel. But at some point he felt that his parents loved his brother more
than him. He was a farmer, so he was only able to serve delicious food in the fall harvest season while his
brother Abel had been raising livestock and was always able to serve delicious meat for dinner. Then one day
God rejected his offerings. He did not know why God refused it. He should have tried to see God's mind and
collected his sacrifices again. But Cain was angry for some reason. He began to feel sorry for himself.
Am I uglier than my brother? Am I more ignorant than my brother? What is the reason for this rejection?
This anger hurt him, and this terrible feeling made him unable to control his temper. One day while
they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. God asked him where his brother was,
but he rebelled, and replied, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” A loved one kills a loved one...

The poet, Jong Hwan Do, expressed his mind in 『In the night when a loved one hates』
It was very painful at night when a loved one hated it/ Stars on their shoulders/
My heart hurt until the star was exhausted/ On a day when a loved one feels far away/
I thought of the first words I spoke to him/ The night I was thinking I would be with him till the end/
When I came back, I remembered the vows I planted every step/
I thought of the stars and the evening sky that listened to my prayers that day/
In the night when a loved one hates/ I do not even know what love is/ My heart was foolish.

Lowell Thomas said, "If you hate a person, you can not understand him." Harry Emerson Hosdick said,
to hate humans is like burning a whole house to catch a mouse. If love is sunshine, a heart that hates will
be a shadow. It is our life to live in and out of the sun and shade, but we should not forget that we are
children of the light, not the children of darkness. God never hated Cain for a moment. He never compares us
to anyone. We should not blame others for our hatred towards another. The Bible tells us,
"Do everything in love" (1 Corinthians 16:14).
